What's in a business Carbon Footprint?

The carbon footprint of a company can cover a wide range of activities that may involve looking at:

  • The consumption of energy that is produced off-site, but used on company owned or leased property
  • On-site fuel combustion in boilers, furnaces and generators
  • HFC emissions from refrigerants used in refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment
  • Business Travel in planes, cars, trains, buses, trams and taxis
  • Staff commuting to and from work usually all forms of available transport
  • The disposal of company waste for recycling or landfill
  • Outsourced activities in shipping, printing etc
  • Supply chain activities where purchased materials are required for the company to operate.
It's a big job and takes a lot of work to calculate the carbon footprint of even a small company. You should ideally allow several weeks or months to complete the initial calculation.
