What is sustainable design?
Sustainable design is given many names, for example, green design, Eco design or design environment. It is a way of designing physical objects such as buildings to follow the morals of economic, social and ecological sustainability. In our case, we are referring to business'. It is a growing trend within the fields of architecture, engineering, industrial design and interior design.
How it works
The main aim of sustainable design is to produce a location or a product that reduces the amount of non-renewable sources and minimises the environmental impact. Sustainable design also allows people to connect with the environment. It is related more towards the heavy industry side of industrial ecology and green chemistry and judges the impact of various design choices.
Sustainable design is a reaction to the global crisis, for instance, the rapid growth of economic activity and human population. People believe that crisis is at large because of the conventional design and industrial buildings, by designing in a environmentally friendly way, then we are reducing or eliminating the environmental impacts.
There are certain elements involved within sustainable design these are:
- Choose low-impact materials such as non-toxic products or recycled materials which require a small amount of energy to produceÂ
- Be energy efficient and use manufacturing processes that are not going to require alot of energy to produce.
- Ensure that the quality and durability is long lasting and better functioning so they do not have to be produced frequently
- Design for recycling
