What is landfill gas?

As rubbish decomposes in the landfill sites, it gives off the gas methane. This gas can be captured and burnt in a gas turbine to produce electricity.

Burning the gas will emit carbon dioxide but but since methane is more powerful than a greenhouse gas, it is better to burn it than to allow it to escape into the atmosphere.
