How to Reduce your Personal Carbon Footprint

 In the home

The average carbon footprint for a person living in the UK is approximately 10 tonnes of CO2 per year. Here's some of the quickest and easiest ways to significantly reduce it:

  • Insulate and drought-proof your home - it's always better to simply not use energy, and insulation means that you won't have to put on your heating as much.
  • Turn off and unplug electrical appliances when they're not being use - including the little things like mobile phone chargers
  • Buy green energy from a renewable energy source such as wind power and hydroelectric power.
  • Hang out your washing instead of using a tumble dryer
  • Only fill kettles and cooking pots with as much water as you really need - overfilling will use up more energy
  • Switch your washing machine to 30oC
  • Turn down your central heating thermostat by 1oC to save 8% on your heating bill
  • Change ordinary light bulbs for low-energy equivalents
