What is the Carbon Disclosure Project
The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is an institution which represents different investors totaling $41 trillion that have collectively signed a single global request for companies to disclose information on their Greenhouse Gas Emissions. More than 1,000 large corporations have already contributed their information on their emissions through this process. CDP was launched in
When it began
December 2000 and the first area of the project was to target the largest companies with a letter and questionnaire. Around 35 institutional investors signed this letter and collaborated to provide an efficient outcome.
When the project began, it was very much a voluntary process for companies to get involved, but in recent years, added pressure has been given to those companies that ignore the requests for information about their environmental practices. At the beginning of this project, 71% of the corporations who were asked actually answered the questionnaire and 45% answered the questionnaire fully, this project has turned global, with companies from Hong Kong, New York and London contributing. Over the years the numbers of companies joining has risen. At present, around 280 institutional investors are now involved.
